Open and Transparent Government is a keystone of my platform. We the citizens of Currituck County have an expectation that the business of the people will be conducted in public – NOT IN CLOSED SESSION and other surreptitious meetings.
Along those lines, in February 2008, as the publisher and editor of The Independent (our community weekly newspaper), I reported two violations of the NC Public Meeting Laws by a quorom / majority of the sitting Board of Commissioners.

Subsequently, as a voter/taxpayer/resident of Currituck County, I filed a Civil Lawsuit against Currituck County seeking injunctive relief against the county for the violation.
The settlement agreement with the county stipulates that there will be no further violations of NC Public Meeting laws. Should the county commit further violations, they would be required to issue a “show cause” or explanation o their further violations before a Superior Court Judge.
